Strategies to get the best vacation property experience:

Get the most from your spending budget:

  • Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in New Bern. Book your vacation in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Property managers typically offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, visitors guide magazines contain coupons for local restaurants, attractions, and tours.

Narrow your Search:

  • Select your vacation dates and spending budget.
  • Note the number beds and the configuration your group needs. 3BR/3BA Updated Townhome on the Marina — 3 decks and great sunsets! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Pamlico area rental home search.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is regularly available on booking websites. If not, contact the property manager before you book the property. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • If your group is bringing pets, you'll need to find a pet-friendly vacation rental. Get information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Often, hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Visiting for a single attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking.

Have a great stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Add a note with the instructions to your phone, and take a printed backup.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are away, just like you would back home.
  • To make certain damages are not linked to your stay, note any problem areas during check in. Call the property manager immediately to report any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a terrific source for finding the best local scenic spots.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all personal belongings. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Leave a review! Property managers rely on great reviews to compel new reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other families will appreciate that you share your experience find their best vacation rental. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
