Vacation rental tips and tricks:
Get the most from your spending budget:
- Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are high season in New Bern. Booking your Pamlico area vacation home in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is an excellent way to save on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Pamlico area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
- Property managers sometimes offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
- Property management companies typically offer renters an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guides contain money saving offers on nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.
Narrow your rental Search:
- Choose your vacation dates and spending budget.
- Note the number beds and the bed configuration you need. Little Queen on Craven has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually available on booking pages. If they are not listed, contact the property management company before you book the home. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to establish what configuration is suitable for your vacation.
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you'll need to find a pet-friendly property. Get information on breed, size, and type restrictions. Often, property owners charge additional pet fees.
- If there's a certain Pamlico area destination you are crazy about, search for properties that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your needs.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. .
Some things to know before you go:
- Add the host's phone number to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Lock your rental property while you are gone! Don't let burglars ruin your holiday.
- Upon arrival, document any damages to the property and immediately alert the owner. Record all coorespondence.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be an excellent source for finding the best local attractions.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Double-check the property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings at departure. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your group have a terrific time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was defective and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
