Washington, NC

Today, Washington is revitalizing its downtown and capitalizing on its natural resources. There is a self-guided walking tour of the town's historic district, beginning on Main Street. Most of these homes and businesses are privately owned and are not open to the public.

There is a great variety of local shops and restaurants in the downtown area, and they are all within walking distance of the Waterfront, where visitors may dock their boats up to 72 hours free of charge. The North Carolina Estuarium is not to be missed. It combines science, art, nature and history to educate visitors about the state's coastal rivers and sounds. Operated by the Partnership for the Sounds, the estuarium has over 200 displays, and is an especially wonderful experience for children.

Washington has a good combination of location and historic and natural beauty. It is only 20 miles from a university and major medical center, yet retains its pristine waterway and small-town charm.
